Lane Etiquette
New to MMAC? New swimmers are often a little confused as to how a practice is organized. The key to a smooth, well-run and enjoyable practice is following a few simple guidelines known as lane etiquette. During long course season (50m) lane etiquette is even more important in order to keep the practices flowing smoothly.
Arrive on time
Choose a lane
- The lane should match your pace or level;
- Move up or down to adjust to the workout and even up lane numbers
- Ask coach if you are unsure which lane to be in
Understand lane circles
- Each next lane swims in the opposite direction
- Ask coach if you are not sure about the direction
Leaders and pace
- Faster swimmers lead each set, slower swimmers follow
- Before the start, allow 5-10 meter distance to the previous swimmer
- Slower swimmers shorten the set (350 for a 400) to keep the group pace
Overtaking
- Touch the slower swimmer's foot
- The slower swimmer moves over or stops at the wall to allow safe passing
Turns:
- Move to other side of lane and push off straight
Finishes:
- If you have stopped, keep the ends of the lane clear to allow continuing swimmers' space to turn
Breaks:
- If you come late or take a break, rejoin the set in progress
- Don't start where you left off
