Lane Etiquette

New to MMAC?

New swimmers are often a little confused as to how a practice is organized. The key to a smooth, well-run, and enjoyable practice is following a few simple guidelines known as lane etiquette. During long course season (50m), lane etiquette is even more important in order to keep the practices flowing smoothly.

1. Arrive on time

2. Choose a lane

  • The lane should match your pace or level.

  • Move up or down to adjust to the workout and even up lane numbers.

  • Ask the coach if you are unsure which lane to be in.

3. Understand lane circles

  • Each next lane swims in the opposite direction.

  • Ask the coach if you are not sure about the direction.

4. Leaders and pace

  • Swimmers should arrange themselves in order of speed, with faster swimmers leading each set and others following. Everyone should be mindful of spacing, allowing faster swimmers to maintain their pace by providing them the right of way when needed.

  • Before the start, allow 5-10 meter distance to the previous swimmer.

  • Slower swimmers shorten the set (350 for a 400) to keep the group pace.

5. Overtaking

  • Touch the slower swimmer's foot.

  • The slower swimmer moves over or stops at the wall to allow safe passing.

6. Turns

  • Move to the other side of the lane and push off straight.

7. Finishes

  • If you have stopped, keep the ends of the lane clear to allow continuing swimmers' space to turn.

8. Breaks

  • If you come late or take a break, rejoin the set in progress.

  • Don't start where you left off

9. Communication

  • When someone new joins a lane, swimmers are expected to introduce to each other.
